A Note From the Pastor
American Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was staying with friends in June of 1938. He was taking care of his three year old son, Christopher since his wife Ursula was confined to bed rest from a difficult pregnancy.
In a letter he wrote to Ursula, he told her, "Last night I discovered that the bed in my room was too heavy to move by myself and not wanting to bother anyone I decided to put up (Christopher's) bed in next room where the big four-post bed is. I left the door open. At four o'clock I awoke and thought I'd see whether everything was all right. I discovered (he) was on the floor with all the blankets wrapped around him. So without a peep from him I stuck him in my bed where we both slept the rest of the night, until 7:30. . . . This morning I have of course rearranged things and put his cot between my bed and the wall. He was tremendously impressed by all this and thought he was a very big boy sleeping in a big bed. He doesn't seem to remember anything about rolling out of it. He only knows that he woke up this morning in Daddy's bed!"
When we think of God's constant care and watchfulness over us, we can't help but be reminded of the vigilance of loving human parents. Even as we declare in the Lord's Prayer each Sunday, God's care for us truly can be compared to a parent who always watches, waits, and gives.
Any child who has ever felt the security of a mom or dad who truly cares, has at least a small understanding of how great God's love is for each of us!
Your pastor Stan
